How Often Should a Commercial Fridge Be Regassed?
Never, in a leak free system.
This is the answer most operators are surprised by. Refrigerant does not degrade, and a sealed system that is not leaking will hold its charge for the working life of the equipment. Scheduled regassing is not a maintenance item, and any contractor selling it as an annual service is selling you something you do not need.
What your equipment does need on a schedule is condenser cleaning, fan and motor checks, defrost verification, door seal inspection, controller and probe calibration, and drain line clearing. Those are the jobs that actually prevent breakdowns.
So the honest answer to “how often does a commercial fridge need regassing” is: only after a leak, and ideally only once, because the leak gets repaired.
What Proper Fridge Regas and Refilling Involves
A compliant job follows a fixed sequence. If steps are skipped, you are buying gas rather than a repair.
- Full diagnosis. Manifold gauge pressures, superheat and subcooling, calibrated cabinet and product temperatures, condenser condition, fan operation, defrost function, door seals, controller settings and sensor accuracy.

What Gas Does a Commercial Fridge Use?
The correct refrigerant is printed on the equipment nameplate, usually at the rear, inside the cabinet or on the condensing unit. Refrigerants must never be mixed or substituted.

They require hydrocarbon rated recovery equipment, non sparking tools and correct ventilation, and they must never be replaced with an HFC substitute.
